What's the difference between a regular ballot and a Provisional ballot?
You want a normal ballot to vote. Period. If you present yourself at the polls and anything is wrong with your voting status, such as you’re inactive, or you are at the wrong ‘precinct’ on Nov 5, or your photo id doesn’t match your registered voter name, you’ll be given a provisional ballot (PB) with the steps to ‘cure’ it. A provisional ballot satisfies the state’s requirement to give every citizen the opportunity to ‘vote’ but that ‘vote’ may not be counted IF you can’t satisfy the ‘cures’ to your registration. So that’s why it’s important to check your registration status early, vote at your registered precinct on Election day and if you have to vote on a PB, try to cure it before 5pm Nov 14. Our actual Board of Elections’ 5 members will determine whether your PB has been properly ‘cured’ against the required NC statutes. To track the status of your PB, click Here!.

Request an Absentee or "By Mail" Ballot - you can request an absentee ballot or a mail-in ballot for any reason. It takes about 5 to 10 days to get a ballot and another 5 to 10 days to be delivered back to the Board of Elections. So plan accordingly. The latest to mail back safely is Oct 21 so request early either by calling Harnett County BOE 901 893 7553 or by going in at 308 W Duncan, Lillington for an application form or click on the below link. All absentee/mail in ballots have to be received by HCBOE by 5pm Nov 5 to be counted. Remember you’ll have to provide a copy of your photo id or request an Exemption to Photo Id form as well. You’ll need 2 witness signatures. SEE BELOW FOR RETURN INSTRUCTIONS.

Register for your absentee ballot and skip going in person.
