"America is an idea—one that has endured and evolved through war and depression, prevailed over fascism and communism, and radiated hope to far distant corners of the earth. Americans believe that diversity is our greatest strength. That protest is among the highest forms of patriotism. That our fates and fortunes are bound to rise and fall together. That even when we fall short of our highest ideals, we never stop trying to build a more perfect union." - 2020 Democratic Party Platform
The Harnett County Democratic Party is a big-tent party, understanding that there are many paths to get to a common goal; however, Democrats are united to the following principles:
-Offer 21st Century Healthcare
We believe that healthcare is an essential right given to every citizen and call for the expansion of Medicaid benefits to cover the additional NC citizens in need, saving over 1,200 lives per year. We also ask to have high quality medical care, facilities and staffing available for all through-out the county. Special attention needs to be paid to US service men and women and teen mental health issues. Here is the seminal report used regarding Medicaid coverage to show additional persons covered and jobs in Harnett County- https://www.conehealthfoundation.com/app/files/public/621ee3b4-cb3f-4854-a9a8-7af04fd2166b/expanding-medicaid-in-north-carolina---2019.pdf
-Commit to 21st Century Education
We ask that that North Carolina legislature increases education funding to raise its overall spending per pupil to a level that would bring the state up from its current position of 39th. By doing so, we can set exceptional standards, increase teacher salaries, offer additional preparatory centers and be a leader in Science, Technology, Engineers, Arts and Math (STEAM). Please stop robbing our children’s public school system and creating an invisible caste system within the state.
-Support Women’s Reproductive Rights & Reproductive Healthcare
We ask that the NC Legislature keeps abortion rights up to 20-weeks in place without restriction. We also ask that no restrictions be placed on incoming women from other states or furthering restrictions on women in the state. We want to ensure that women of all ages in our county have access to affordable and high-quality reproductive healthcare services.
-Non-partisan Independent States Theory
Gerrymandering the maps is an ugly benefit for the victor. All winners have swayed the maps to their advantage. We ask the NC Legislature to choose a course of fairness and permanently appoint an outside independent, non-partisan commission of map drawing professionals to draw our district maps, as proposed by Republicans in 2010.
-Support Voting Rights
There are current statutes and processes in place that have conducted fair and accurate elections across the state. We ask that the NC Legislature to not touch any voting procedural issues this session. We believe the General Assembly is on the right track to allow NC citizens with felony convictions who are on probation, parole or some other form of state supervision can now register to vote and/or vote is the right way to restore a felon’s reentry into mainstream society.
-Strengthen our Economic Engine
Economic vitality is important to our county. The backbone to our growth is dependent on the state and we support President Biden's infrastructure bill and ask our representatives to work with our county board for additional state funds for broadband, highways, and roads while protecting our electric grid and water resources.
-Fight for Environmental Protections
In recent years, Harnett County has experienced devasting floods, hurricanes, historically strong wind gusts and dramatic temperature fluctuations. We ask that the NC Legislature does all it can to protect our county’s environment, as well as our state’s coastlines, wetlands, piedmont and mountain areas.
- Equal Treatment Under the Law
We also believe the criminal justice system doesn’t always treat everyone the same and too often the differences are disproportionately felt by people of color. We ask for more equitably written reforms and fairer implementation of statutes. See links below about the Governor’s task force on Criminal Reform.
