Building a More Connected Harnett: Public Transit for Our Growing Communities
As Harnett County continues to grow—especially in areas like Angier, Lillington, Coats, Buies Creek, and around Campbell University—the need for accessible, flexible transportation is more important than ever. To address this, Harnett County partnered with the NC Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) to explore options through the North Harnett Transit Study.
One major recommendation: a microtransit system that blends traditional public transportation with the flexibility of ridesharing. Riders could request trips in real time using a smartphone app, website, or phone call—offering service that meets people where they are, without the need for fixed bus routes. The plan also proposes regional connections to Park & Ride lots in Wake County and access to major shopping destinations.
Why This Matters:
- Equity: Helps residents without reliable transportation access jobs, schools, and healthcare.
- Economic Growth: Supports local businesses and educational institutions by improving mobility.
- Sustainability: Reduces congestion and emissions by encouraging shared rides.
