Harnett County Proposed Budget for FY 2025–2026

Total Budget: $187 million
Public Hearing: June 2, 9:00 AM
Final Vote: June 16, 6:00 PM

Harnett County has released its proposed budget for the coming fiscal year, and it reflects key shifts in funding priorities as well as opportunities for community impact. Here’s what’s included—and why your voice matters.

Budget Breakdown: Top Priorities by Percentage

  • Law Enforcement: 31% – Continues to be the largest share of the budget.

  • Education: 21% – Now the second-largest category, surpassing DSS.

  • Department of Social Services (DSS): 20%

Education Funding

  • The budget includes an additional $3.5 million for Harnett County Schools, bringing total local education funding to $36.5 million.

  • This increase addresses shortfalls in the state’s low wealth allotment, which were triggered by rising property values and the Board of Commissioners’ decision not to raise the mill levy tax rate accordingly.

  • The added funds help restore needed classroom resources and ensure schools are better equipped to serve growing student populations.

Voter Outreach Investment

  • The proposal includes $68,000 to fund a new Outreach Election Specialist position.

  • This role would focus on voter registration and election awareness, particularly during evenings and weekends, to reach working residents.

  • With new precincts being added, potential changes to polling places, and possible reductions in early voting days, this position could play a critical role in helping residents stay informed and engaged.

Economic Development

  • A proposed $50,000 “Bring Jobs to Harnett” initiative is included, though specifics have yet to be discussed publicly.

Why This Matters

  • Every voice counts. While education funding appears to have broad support among commissioners, there is division on the voter outreach position, and the job creation funding has not yet been debated.

  • This is our opportunity to advocate for a budget that reflects community needs—especially education, voting access, and economic opportunity.
