History tells us there are certain signs that mark the rise of authoritarianism. These include the erosion of democratic norms, the silencing of dissent, the consolidation of power, and the undermining of truth. Seeing these patterns unfold can feel overwhelming. It is easy to believe that if we cannot stop every one of these actions, then we are powerless.
The truth is, no single person can carry the entire weight of defending democracy. What we can control is how we live each day. We can choose to seek joy. We can choose to spend time with loved ones, create art, share a laugh, or walk in the sunshine. These acts might feel small, but they keep our humanity intact. They remind us of the world we want to protect.
Finding joy is not always easy. Many struggle with embracing joy while knowing that others are suffering, not only in faraway places but also in our own neighborhoods. This tension is real and deeply felt. Yet joy does not dismiss the pain of others. It exists alongside it. It strengthens our resolve, reminding us why we work for change and helping us sustain the effort over time.
At HCDP, we believe that joy grows when it is shared. That is why we create opportunities to connect with others who share these values. Whether attending a town hall, volunteering for a campaign, writing postcards, or simply gathering with friends for a cause, we become part of a community that shares the work. Together, we can shoulder the burden in ways no one person could alone.
