Former Governor Roy Cooper has officially entered the 2026 race for U.S. Senate in North Carolina. With Republican Senator Thom Tillis stepping down, this open seat has major implications for the balance of power in Washington.

In his announcement, Cooper said:
“I have thought on it and prayed about it, and I have decided: I am running to be the next U.S. Senator from North Carolina.”

Cooper brings strong statewide name recognition, a record of successful statewide races, and a track record that includes expanding access to health care, defending voting rights, and protecting public education.

This is the first time in years that North Carolina Democrats have a serious shot at flipping a Senate seat. The stakes are high, and the nation will be watching.
