The Harnett County Board of Commissioners has changed its meeting procedures. Starting December 1, the Board will begin allowing votes at every meeting rather than limiting them to certain regular sessions.
In addition, the meeting schedule itself has been adjusted. The Board will now meet three times per month instead of four. The second Tuesday work session, which was previously held during the day, will now take place at 6 p.m., creating one daytime meeting and two evening meetings each month. This change is intended to allow for more public review and participation.
The regular schedule moving forward will include:
-
First Mondays at 9 a.m.
-
Second Tuesdays at 6 p.m. (Work Session)
-
Third Mondays at 6 p.m.
While these adjustments may appear procedural, they have real implications for transparency and public participation. When votes can happen at any meeting and the schedule shifts, residents have less time to review agenda items or organize around issues before decisions are made. It also increases the importance of monitoring agendas as soon as they are released.
Why It Matters
-
Less time for public input: Shorter gaps between discussion and decision can limit opportunities for citizens to speak or share concerns.
-
Faster decisions: Efficiency can be positive, but it can also move complex topics through the system before residents are aware.
-
Higher stakes for engagement: Knowing when an item will be voted on is now essential if you want your voice to be heard.
How You Can Stay Involved
-
Review meeting agendas in advance at harnett.org.
-
Attend or tune in to all three monthly meetings, since votes may occur at any of them.
-
Contact commissioners ahead of meetings to share your perspective on items that matter to your community.
-
Spread the word among neighbors and local organizations so more residents understand how the new system works.
Change can only strengthen democracy when people stay informed and engaged. By paying attention to when and how decisions are made, we make sure those decisions reflect the values and needs of all Harnett County residents.
